About Us

The Dunstable Road Runners are a small, friendly running / jogging club that has been around since 1981, following the holding of the first London Marathon, with members running either just to keep fit or competing in races over distances varying from 5km to 40 miles and beyond.

In 2000, Dave Carter, the then Chairman of the club, was playing cricket for one of the Dunstable pub teams and was thoroughly enjoying it until a change of captain introduced a "win at all cost" approach to the game. This involved a few "star players" dominating both batting a bowling. Dave stopped playing for them and decided to form a new team where the philosophy would be that anyone who volunteered their time to play would have the chance to get seriously involved with the game.

A few enquiries of members of the running club indicated that there was enough interest to give it a go and a friendly match with Dunstable Victoria Pub was arranged. The call went out and 11 stalwarts and long term club members rose to the challenge. The match took place on Bennetts Rec and that was the start of the Dunstable Road Runners Cricket Team.

At this time Chalgrave Sports Club were running a small friendly league, which they had restarted in 1998, with teams from the Victoria Pub, The Plough and the Bedford Arms (Toddington) competing and in 2002 Dunstable Road Runners were accepted into the league.

At the beginning most of the players were either current or ex members of the Dunstable Road Runners or were related to club members. After three years Mike Allen took over the Captaincy from Dave Carter and introduced Mike Cope to the club. When Mike Allen emigrated to Australia, Mike Cope picked up the reins as captain for a season. Both continued the original ethos of the club by ensuring that all players were actively involved with the game as did subsequent captains and vice captain, Andy Quelch and Jamie Laing and currently Adam Hassall

Chris Quelch took on the club administration for a couple of years and expanded the number of games played by the inclusion of several friendly matches. With the extra matches, extra players were introduced to supplement the core of original players.

In 2006 Richard and Vic Catlin joined the club and in 2007 they took over the administration of the club with Dave Carter taking on the role of club chairman and got the club onto a more organised footing. In recent years although there has been an influx of new members to the club, several of the players still have a direct or indirect connection back to the running club. Although the cricket team is financially self sufficient and independently administered, it was decided to retain the association with the Dunstable Road Runners and now plays under the title of Road Runners Cricket Club with a full calendar of league and friendly fixtures.

Club members meet throughout the year for regular net sessions on a Friday evening at Dunstable Town Cricket Club (Totternhoe), followed, in strict compliance with the ethos of the club, by several pints in the bar.
