The web team here are Runner Towers have finally gotten rid of their hangover after partying the night away at the first annual Road Runners awards evening....and what and evening it was.

Mark Knubley scooped the major award of Players Player of the year. Vishal Masih needed a large bag to take home three awards including bowler of the season which was richly deserved. Harley Raybould was also the delighted recipient (NOT) of the duck of the season award with a grand total of five for the season.

Calling all Road Runner Cricket Club Members!
The season my be over but the work never stops here at Runner Towers. There will be an announcement made shortly by our omnipotent chairman of selectors Mr V Catlin with regards to this years awards evening.
So with this in mind here is your opportunity to have your say.
The years voting will not only be for players player of the year but as agreed at this years AGM you are now able to vote for your choice of batsman and bowler of the season. With three votes for each member to cast please read on to find out who you can vote for and just as importantly how to cast your vote.
Bowler of the season
The minimum criteria for being considered for this award were as follows. You have to be a fully paid up member of the club and bowled a minimum of six overs in total during this seasons competitive matches.
Players were selected from the four agreed categories with each player only being able to qualify once. The categories were most wickets taken, economy rate, strike rate and average.
So, here are you four candidates for bowler of the season:
Vishal Masih secured his place in the line up by virtue of taking 25 wickets this season...top effort!
Robert Cooke not surprisingly through the best economy rate of 3.36 runs conceded per over.
Victor Catlin the wily old fox had the best strike rate of 21.5....that's a wicket just shy of every four overs!
Alex Knubley had a great season with the ball, each wicket taken costing a miserly 16 runs and one of our sledging specialists!
Batsman of the season
The minimum criteria for considered for the award were as follows. Once again you have to be a fully paid up member of the club and taken to the crease for a minimum of four innings in competitive matches.
Players were selected from the four agreed categories with each player only being able to qualify once. The categories were most runs score in a season, highest average, highest individual score and most boundaries hit.
Here are your four candidates for batsman of the season.
Lee Jackson with 512 runs for the season.
Vishal Masih with and average of 23.8 runs per innings, super stuff from the big fella.
Matt Lawrence with a great single score and a person best of 61 but was he wearing his lucky hat?
Adam Hassall having hit 31 boundaries it's been another good year for the Runners Skipper.
Players player of the year
This, as in previous years, is the person whom you think has a great season. They don't have to have taken loads of wickets or even score a stack of runs. It might be someone who has given there best at every stage of the season and improved their own game....the decision is yours to make.
Don't forget to have a look at the club web site and check out the statistics menu. This will give you further information on which to base your voting decision. Simply follow this link and select statistics from the navigation bar at the top of the page. www.roadrunnerscc.org

The Rules Of Cricket
Another tough but enjoyable season bites the dust......but are there still some members or even umpires that are unsure as to the rules of cricket? Well thanks to our very own Garth McKenzie the rules of cricket are now clarified! After you have read the passage below you will be enlightened...any further questions should be direct to Mr McKenzie. Should anyone wish to contact him then please do not hesitate to contact the web team here at Runner Towers.
The Rules of Cricket - You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Runners secure Eddlesborough for 2012 season
Vic Catlin has finally concluded top level negotiations with Eddlesborough Parish Council to secure the use of the Eddlesborough village green for the 2012 season.
I'm sure all the members have enjoyed playing there this season and now have another full season to look forward to in 2012. We've had mixed results there in terms of league and friendly games during the 2011 season but the web team here at Runner Towers are sure that next year it will be turned into a fortress for the home team.
The Road Runners would like to thank the Eddlesborough Parish Council for their continue support and a big Runners thumbs up to all those in the club involved in securing Eddlesborough for 2012.

Chief batting shop steward lambasts Runners batsmen!
Messers Jackson and Catlin,
OFFICIAL WRITTEN WARNING
It has been brought to my attention that on Sunday 10th July 2010 that you both, with talent and abililty aforthought, did smear the bowling all over Buckinghamshire. This is all very well but I understand an unfeasibly high proportion of your shots came off the middle of the bat. As if this were not bad enough the pair of you swank around insisting on being not out?
I had hoped and indeed beleived that I had made my position on this kind of skilfull batting very clear. Namely as the wise man once said, it's all very well if you like that sort of thing but I don't!
Please ensure that in future if you really must go round scoring runs in a fashion that can only be described as not only willy, but also palpably nilly, that you have the common decency to score at least 70% of them off inside edges.
Finally, before you suggest that this tirade is driven by jealousy, nothing could be further from the truth. The fact that I have scored a number of runs this season that if they were converted into points would not get me banned from driving is purely coincidental.
In short you're making me look bad. STOP IT!!
Yours,
Michael A. Cope, Chief batting shop steward, Dunstable Road Runners.

Just what the doctor ordered
I don't go in much for this T20 style cricket. There's not really much time for a proper batsman to get a feel for the surface he is playing on. I've always preferred to leave anything out side off stump for at least the first two days of a test match before racking up a century in singles. Still the daft sods from the Road Runners and The Doctors decided that a game of T20 in light rain and over cast conditions would be fun whilst I watched from the relative luxury of the pavilion at Dunstable Cricket Club. The game also had a slight difference from normal T20 with each batsman facing a maximum of four overs before retiring......let's face it....it's not proper cricket is it?
The Doctors were first to bat with Rob Cooke the opening bowler for the Runners. The first delivery had four written all over it and was promptly despatched through point to the boundary. With the bowlers struggling to find grip on the wet surface Cooke struck in his second over, Fazal with no answer to a lovely off stump yorker. Irshad was playing nicely and when Riaz joined him at the crease the scoreboard started to move forward at a reasonable pace. The Doctors were 54 for 1 when Adam Hassall introduced himself to the attack and struck gold in his second over. First the dangerous Thalip superbly caught by John Catlin after a parry from James behind the stumps then four balls later removing Vinod V lbw for 2. Rich Catlin was bowling nicely from the Totternhoe Road End and it was at this point that Rich Catlins' moment of genius arrived. Rich deliberately sent down a delivery pitched up outside off stump which was guided between gully and point. Lee swooping round from gully gathered the ball and with one stump to aim at scored a direct hit from around 25 feet.......Vinad S the man short of his ground and off to the pavilion for 5. Vic Catlin joined in the fun snaring the wicket of Asmin for 2.
The Runners all bowled exceptionally well restricting The Doctors to 112 in their 20 overs with Irshad top scoring 21 not out.
Now when your chasing a small total you have to get after it. In these limited overs games there's no point in mucking about so the skipper decided on middle order specialists to open the batting. Lee and the skipper himself were first to the crease.... and things could not have got off to a better start. 22 runs were plundered in the first two overs with twos being turned into threes with some excellent running between the wickets. The skipper perished late in the third over playing and uncharacteristic cross batted shot against a straight one.
The damage was done though, the Runners had the advantage and were going to press it home. Mark supported Lee to reach 25 after four overs with Rob Cooke in his usual aggressive batting mode playing some lovely lofted drives down the ground. John Catlin was dismissed for a duck but that didn't stop Harley and Alex pushing on. Alex retired after four overs but Harley was cleaned up for 9, his previous stroke probably the best of the match with a lovely cut behind square for four. James entertained with a breezy 12 not out but sadly Rich went for a duck. Vic and Dave Twyford made 11 between them but the game was already up for the Doctors. Lee and Rob finished the game, a beautiful drive down the ground from Rob finishing the game off in style with 25 balls to spare.
I know I like to moan but frankly this was proper performance. Nobody hid in the team all contributed to a well organised victory. The bowling and fielding was immaculate and the batting was aggressive and nicely paced.
I was invited by Victor Catlin to the award ceremony after the game, 'appen there was curry to be served. I thanked Mr Catlin for his kind invitation but replied "You won't get me eating that foreign muck!"
In a bit.

Three ducks don't make a summer
The day was bright but cloudy and showers were forecast. The wicket looked a reasonable bowling pitch and it was no surprise when the Runners skipper was asked to bat first. The batting order was set Vishal, Anoop, Jamie, Mike, Adam H, James, Micky P, Rich, Mark, Alex & Dave T.
Kensworth were short of two players so Adam P and Ryan agreed to play for the home side. The first two overs passed without incident. A caught behind shout was given in the third over and Anoop was gone, even though he was convinced no contact was made. Five balls later the Runners were three down, Vishal and Mike adjudged to be LBW, Mike for golden duck!
Adam H and Jamie looked to rebuild but in the seventh over Adam H was the third LBW victim - the Runners was a total of sixteen runs for the loss of four wickets. James and Jamie pushed the score to 48 with some positive batting but further disaster was to follow. James was caught, Micky Price went second ball, Jamie was caught then Rich was the third duck victim with a great catch being taken by Ryan. Mark was also soon on his way back to the pavilion, bowled for two and the Runners had lost five wickets in four overs!
With the Runners 54 for 9 Dave T and Alex played well and apart from a missed slip chance gave very little away in the next eight overs taking the score to 82 before Dave T was out off Ryans bowling. Could the Runners defend such a small total?
Adam H was confident his bowlers could do the job. Dave T and Alex opened the bowling know quick wickets were vital. Alex's first delivery of the second over was left alone by the opening batsman and Alex got more movement off the pitch than Courtney Walsh ever did and the off stump was pushed back, 0-1. Chances were created, a tough slip chance to Mike was not taken. It wasn't until the 8th over that Alex bagged his second opener LBW, 33-2.
The skipper made a double bowling change, the Mashi brothers on at either end. Anoop was controlled in his first over but Vishal struck twice during his first leaving Kensworth 40-4 in the 11th. Anoop made it 40-5 in the following over, a good catch from Mark and the Runners were back in the game. Rich then became the focus of attention almost knocking himself out fielding on the boundary. A substitute was called for and Vic was playing.
The Runners kept the pressure on and Vishal took his third wicket but it was all too late at 77 for 6. The winning runs were struck with a glorious six from Kensworth's best batsman D.Junior who made 37 not out.
The Runners skipper was proud of his troops as they never let their heads drop and kept fighting until the end, but ultimately the batsmen did not score heavily enough.
Skip.

Runners lose league opener
There were showers around, the ball was going to do a bit. The toss was won by Charles, the Plough skipper and it was no surprise to Adam Hassall when he was asked to bat first.
Anoop and Rich were given the task of facing the new ball. The pair made a measured and controlled start, Rich left three outside off stump in one over! After six overs the score was fifteen without loss. Anoop was first to perish trying to impose himself. After a well struck boundary a miss timed pull shot was caught at mid wicket and Anoop had gone for thirteen.
Rich was joined by Vic and the brothers grimm pushed things along nicely. At the half way mark the Runners were 52 for 1 with Rich back in the hutch. The bowlers then got on top for the Plough with three wickets in four overs - Vic, Alex and James all falling to good deliveries. The skipper and Mark steadied the ship and had pushed the score to 99 for 5 with five overs left when the skipper called for a run that in hindsight Usain Bolt would have struggled with. Mark went for it but was short of his ground. Adam Hassall reached 25 and left Adam Peart and Harley at the crease but both followed Ryan into the scorebook with ducks. With three overs left Rich strode back to the crease and with Dave Twyford produced some powerful hitting to get the Runners to 137 after 30 overs, Dave hitting a lovely straight driver for a boundary. Was it enough?
If the Runners innings was cautious in gaining momentum towards the end the Plough had a different plan. Alex opened the bowling and Charles having scored a century the previous week cut his second ball. It was well struck but the skipper made no mistake taking a fine catch in the gully to leave the Plough 0 for 1. In walked Jacko to join Matt B but didn't stay long at the crease. Jacko left eleven balls later with 25 under his belt. Matt soon joined him and the Plough were 52 for 1 in only seven overs......it looked bleak for the Runners.
Hassall turned to the all time leading wicket taker for the Runners and Vic did not disappoint. Vic took 3 for 8 in 3 overs. Ryan made up for his duck with and excellent running catch at deep mid wicket. By the drinks break the Plough were 86 for 6 with Dave Twyford and Anoop restriciting the run rate. Could the Runners take the required wickets? When Ryan took an excellent caught and bowled for the 8th wicket the Plough still needed 38 runs. Jacko was back. Adam moved his bowlers around and chances came, but none were taken, all difficult chances but untimately the difference was Jacko scoring the winning runs off the first ball of the final over. He had made 73 of the Plough's 141!!
The Runners skipper was destrought as he knew they were the better side. Just like last year the Runners will have to do it the hard way. Adam Hassall was full of praise for his teams efforts in particular his new wicket keep James who only conceeded a single leg bye!
Skip.

Runners win thriller!
To be honest I expected I expected a low scoring wicket fest today but how wrong can an old Yorkshire man be. Anoop and James saw the Runners home in a closely fought penultimate ball victory over the MKOU.
Having won the toss stand in skipper Lee Jackson decided that the home side were going to bowl first. Opening with Rob Cooke from the pavilion the first over was tidy with no runs conceded. Adam Peart was to strike first however bowling T.Wales without score with a clever slower delivery from the Church Road end. Four Rob Cooke overs later a beautifully pitched away swinger crashed into the top of off stump to remove M.Street for 8 runs. With T.Richens and R.Lowly at the crease things settled down for the visitors with T.Richens playing exceptionally well off his legs and hips. He did receive a nasty shock however with a delivery from Vishal (just short of a good length) fizzing just past his unprotected face. Vishal typically apologised to the batsman.....there's no way Fred Trueman would have done that in my day. Trueman would have said "The next one won't miss lad!"
T.Richens survived and played nicely to retire at 50 with Vic finally taking the wicket of R.Lowly for 48. The visitors at this time were 165 for 3 in the 34th over. Tea was taken shortly afterwards with the Runners requiring 173 to win.
I was going to accuse the home skipper of being one dimensional at this point until but he surprised me with the opening batting pair. Mike (the most handsome and talented player in the side) Cope was an obvious choice but the surprise inclusion of Victor Catlin at number 2 got me scratching my head. Now they tell me this Vic Catlin bloke can bat a bit but with three ducks in his last three innings I was beinging to think that the skipper had eaten one Eccles cake too many!
The Runners reply got off to a steady start just the way I like it. No flashy boundaries just nicely collecting singles and working the ball about. Mike Cope was undone in the 5th over trying to drive a ball that wasn't really driveable. The delivery found a lovely little outside edge and the catch taken at short backward point to leave the Runners 15 for 1 in the 5th over.
Vic Catlin repaid the skippers confidence in him with nice 23 before being bowled by S.Motura. With Adrian and Mark now at the crease and the run rate now at over six per over it was time to get a wiggle on. Adrian played some nice stokes but looking to accelerate sent a ball crashing into his own stumps for 13. Mark Knubley had played a lovely supporting role and was joined at the crease by Lee.
Lee proceeded to take the bowling side apart. Taking a leg stump guard (we all know quality batsmen take guard middle and off) the first two deliveries were dreadful, both on the legs with one clipped for 2 and the other for 4. Lee obviously thought he was playing T20 cricket and started driving and cutting the ball to the boundary. Big flashy shots are all right if you like that sort of thing but I don't! With Mark gone for 4 and Lee retired at 50 not out Anoop and his better looking brother Vishal were now at the crease.
Vishal decided to go hard from the off and put the Runners in a winning position. Four boundaries and a glorious straight six were taken before being stumped for 38.
James Fendick strode to the crease. Now I know that cricket has moved on since I were playing the game. Some call James a bit of a show pony but I think it's his hair that needs sorting. He built like Ian Botham, the beard is similar too but what's with the bloody ponytail!
Anoop refused to panic with 13 needed from the last two overs. Anoop had already bowled well and fielded brilliantly and now he was going to gracefully stroke his way to victory. James (Beefy) Fendick was going to do it his way, bludgeon anything and everything. Victory was secured with a ball to spare with a nicely timed shot from James to spark a big cheer from the home side.
Man of the match for me? Anoop Masih. He bowled intelligently, fielded like a man pocessed and with the bat remained calm and played a mature innings to help see his side home. He reminded me of myself in my younger days except his another player for the Runners that needs a bloody good short back and sides!

Records tumble as Runners falter
It would be easy to criticise what I have witnessed today from the Road Runners and believe me I'll get to that shortly. There has however been some good performances too. Mark Knubley taking what I am told is his first competitive wicket was a highlight thus proving that a low slingy action can pay dividends. Seeing Dave Twyford get angry at being tonked round the park and demanding another two overs from his skipper was also highly amusing. Vishal batted and I mean batted very well for his 75. The surface I could not fault, flat and good for batting.
The day didn't start well for the Runners after winning the toss and electing to bowl first. The opening pair of Cook and Riches put on 87 in 14 overs before Riches succumbed to a clever slower ball which was held well by Mark Knubley. The Runners has to wait until 26th over for their second wicket that of A.Bridgeman for 65 taken by Mike Cope off the bowling of Dave Twyford. Despite dropping two hard catching chances Vishal bowled well and with good discipline although he would be better not trying to use his mouth to stop the ball.....only Whippets should attempt that. At one point I thought the Runners might fold and be looking down the biscuit barrel of 350 plus but they stuck to their task well and restricted the visiting team to 289 in their 40 overs.
I've not seen the Runners play before and frankly after what I've witnessed today I may be talking to my agent to get me out of this contract but when I saw Mike Cope stride to the crease I though "Bloody Hell, New Bradwell are in for it now!" You see he's bloody good is Cope. He collects his singles, none of this fancy I'm going to hit it to the boundary rubbish......he's a high quality batsman. The problem is though that cricket is not a perfect game. You can be the most handsome, talented batsman and have the biggest wang but it doesn't stop you from getting out to a jaffer. With Cope bowled all ends up for one things were not looking good for the Runners. Adrian played some nice cultured shots before he perished to the same bowler...cleaned up. Matty in at three prodded and poked around for a while which sparked my interested before playing across a straight one and being give lbw. Vishal at this point had already joined him at the crease and looked oddly competent for a you Indian lad. He reminded me of a young Verinda Sahwag the way he stood at the crease stroking the ball about confidently. With the first three gone stand in skipper for the day Lee, was also now at the crease. Two more contrasting styles you could never wish to see. Vishal with the grace and elegance of Sahwag and Lee with all the grace and elegance of a Whippet with one leg! Vishal stroked his way to a glorious 75 before being caught trying to push the pace with the total becoming out of reach. Lee, just to prove that there is not justice in this world reach his first century with a dodgy second run which almost saw him finish one short of the magical figure. Just to prove how bloody rubbish Lee was he missed a slow straight ball at the stumps just after reaching the hundred mark.
A lesson learned here. Never ever sleep with another man's Whippet and never bowl outside off stump on a surface as good as this one! No man of the match here for this game....just two ladies of the match. First Vis for a bloody excellent tea (none of the foreign muck you get these days) and also to Jade who scored the match despite a raging hangover and sitting in wind swept conditions for many hours....ladies of England I salute you!

10th April 2011
Road Kill
First game of the season on a new ground with freakish 20 plus degrees weather conditions for early April. 35 overs a side were to be played and an unseen team as the opponents. This was a setting for the Runners first game at Eddlesborough on Sunday 10th April 2011 against Eggington CC.
Things started badly when earlier that week a late replacement was needed for the Roadrunners own James Fendick, who had stepped up to the plate as new wicketkeeper for 2011. So young Matty Lawrance was given the call, and got to debut for the Runners. Steve McKay was to take the gloves behind the stumps
At the toss and after a long pitch inspection by the opponents (Eggington cc), the Runners captain won the toss and decided to field first. This was a wise decision, considering not seeing how the pitch would play and the rumoured and much talked about low bounce.
Things started slowly from both teams as was expected, dusting off cobwebs and winter blues from lack of outdoor practice. Rich Catlin opened the bowling with a tidy maiden. The batsmen looked solid, then Mr Players player of the season 2010, (you guessed it!) Vic the reliable Catlin made the breakthrough taking the first wicket of the season for the Runners, in the 6th over clean bowling the batsman. Vic ended with a tidy spell of 1wkt in 3 overs for just 5 runs. Next in the bowling lane was Adam P, and after an injury ridden winter, due to some over enthusiastic net sessions, Adam was keen to show his metal, and did so in his first over. Using the quicker of his many variations, the trickster got through the defences of the bat and rattled the woodwork. This was proving to be a wicket designed for the bowlers.
Next up to the bowling marker was Vishal Masih, and after a poor season in 2010 with the ball, he was nervous. After seeing the medium slow bowlers get purchase from the slow and low wicket, V was wondering if his bowling would even pay off on this pitch. With the ball in reasonably good condition a wicket was taken in his first over, full length ball that swung just enough, back in to bowl out the bat at the other end for a duck. Second over for V and after being smashed for 6, he decided to take a leaf out of the slow bowlers book, and rolled his fingers down the ball, causing the frustrated bat to miss-time his shot skying it in the cover region. The field went silent Rich Catlin steadied himself and took a well relieved catch.
Things were looking good for the Runners, as underdogs in this match the fielding was exceptional, singles were not being taken by Eggington, Harley out in the deep showed his arm that no-one dare take on. Adam P showed his strength putting his body on the line and diving around stopping runs when possible.
Things slowed down for Eggington when V took a wicket maiden, which earned him a well-deserved rest after his first 3 over spell. Next Anoop Masih was given his chance to stretch his arm and after a combination of working on the old ball, and finding a rhythm, the ball started to swing away from the batsmen, bringing in the edge of the bat. With a wise move by the captain, by filling in the slips, an edge was gobbled up by Steve McKay. Walking away with a wicket maiden included in his bowling spell.
The debutant Matty L was used next for his magical spin. Again a wise move from the captain setting leg-side fielding traps, the batsmen could not risk the big shot. Although wicket-less Matty had a tidy spell due to a combination of good bowling, tight field settings and good ground fielding.
At the death a mix of the captain Adam H, who bowled a tidy 3 overs for just 10 runs, Adam P and V Masih. After bowling out the bat at the other end to take his 4th wicket, he was hungry for his 5th.
The field was in tight a left hander scooped the ball to the covers, the cat like debutant Matty with a full stretch dive clasped at the ball, V was off celebrating like an idiot, when the honest Matty did not claim the catch, which must be commended. V did take his 5th wicket in the end taking a caught and bowled using the slower ball again. After an acceleration from the tail of Eggington in the last 3 overs and a run out on the very last ball Eggington ended their innings on 176 for 9.Unsure whether it was a good score or not the Runners batters went in optimistic. Anoop and Garth were at the top of the order a steady start was needed. Solid at the top, the pair fended off some very difficult swing bowling. Running between the wickets was jittery at first, but it was expected due to the lack of outdoor practice. The undoing of the solid start was down to the unpredictability of the wicket. Garth fended off a rising ball at armpit height which looped up long enough for the bowler to claim the catch. Anoop was the next wicket too fall, getting trapped LBW on his back leg. Vic was looking very calm and solid at the crease but was then bowled out through the gate. The infamous Runners collapse was taking affect, and did not stop there. Mike lighting Cope had a huge responsibility on his shoulders to steady the innings. And after his telling off in the field for talking, he had a point to prove. Mike celebrated his inside edge to get off the mark as though he had scored a 50, which was my highlight of the day, but was soon caught at mid-wicket. V did not last long with bat smashing a full toss for 4 then smashing another full toss strait in the air. Rich came in next, looked very settled flashing the blade of his bat when needed, but then was undone behind his legs and was bowled. Matty came in next and unfortunately was run out by the inexperience of Harley.
Harley and the captain Adam Hassell stood solid at the crease trying to use up the overs to save a complete embarrassing beating from Eggington. Fending off a fast and furious bowling attack and a tight in close fielding left no opportunities to pick singles, things looked very difficult in the middle. But not getting out, jumping on the loose balls and picking up byes was the aim of the game from that point. Soon the big man Harley got out, but well played as he was stuck in at the deep end of the game due to a poor start. Adam H was left stranded at the end not out due to very little resistance Steve getting bowled out and Adam P getting LBW.
A sorry looking score sheet at the end of the day Roadrunners getting bowled out for just 86 in 31.4 overs.
Although the batting was poor, not all is negative. The fielding was very good as was the bowling. We are aware of how the pitch will play and what score can be achieved. We all know we could have played better and as usual will peak at the end of the season. Its a good job the Runners got their total white wash out of the way early. A few more practices and inter-club practice matches and the Runners will be set for the rest of the season.Thats enough from me though signing out

Press Release
The identity of the 2011 season match reporter has been shrouded in secrecy for many months now but the moment of truth has finally arrived. As we wave a long farewell to Pieter Kevinson we must now give a Runners gentlemanly handshake to to none other than England cricket legend Beffrey Joycott! The Runners had better beware.....Joycott as we all know is not known for dressing things up to make them look pretty. Expect the plain truth as only Boycott can tell it.....God help us all.
We caught up with Beffrey and spoke to him in Indian hotel were he is currently commentating for Sky Sports on the Cricket World Cup. In reply to what had tempted him onto signing for the Runners, Beffrey replied "A years subscription to Whippet Racing Times and a chance to to watch some proper bloody cricket after all the rubbish I've been watching on the sub continent is too good an opportunity to miss. I am aware that the Runners have some quality players. Mike Cope in my opinion should have opened with me for England, we could have occupied the crease for weeks together. They have some young players coming through but a couple of players hide behind floppy hair cuts....short back and sides is what is needed to play a good forward defensive not girlie hippy locks!"
A taste of what is to come? Only time will tell.

AGM 2011
Another fabulous turn out for the 2011 AGM after a glorious season in 2010. Playing for the Runners is a cool place to be. Much was on the agenda but the web team a Runner Towers are going to bring you only the headline news.
The members voted overwhelmingly to stay in the Chalgrave league again this year despite a reduction in the number of teams taking part. A new home base at Edlesborough was discussed and looks good for the forthcoming season. Adam Hassall retained the role as skipper for the 2011 season despite stiff competition from Anoop. Adam had a great season last year as skipper and deserves another shot at the big job. Anoop is a stunning batsman and tactician and will no doubt get his shot at the big job soon enough. Further club kit will be ordered this season. Trousers are to be ordered and paid for by the club funds. A separate order of caps/hats will be ordered for those that desire them.
The fixture list for the 2011 season is already being slow built. The fixture for this season can be viewed from the fixtures link at the top of this page.
As the start of the new season edges ever closer look out for further news and views coming soon!

Annual league presentation evening awards night
The annual league presentation evening took place at the Wingfield Memorial Hall on Saturday 30th October. The event was well attended by the Road Runners taking a nearly forty strong contingent. Members and their WAGS were wined and dined on the finest fish and chips money could buy. The Road Runners celebrating ten years of history also recorded their most successful season in becoming joint winners of the League and Ten-10 trophies whilst the race for individual honours was also tight. With the Runners Committee having sat and decided on the number of qualifying overs and innings needed for a member to be considered for the awards the tension mounted as our skipper Adam Hassall took to the front of the stage
Runner up for bowler of the season was Alex Knubley. Alex has proved a revelation this season. His batting has improved immensely and has been rewarded with promotion towards the middle order. His bowling however has been sensational. Taking 12 wickets at an average of 9.41 and in doing so also claimed the Skippers Champagne Moment Award for a devastating display against The Plough with figures 5-3-14.
Bowler of the season went to Adam Hassall. Adam is unerringly accurate with the ball and almost without exception takes wicket in every game he bowls. Adam prowess with the bat makes him a true all rounder and having taken 9 wickets at an average of 8.77 claimed the award for the second time in three seasons.
Runner up for batsman of the season went to Lee Jackson. Lee had an indifferent season with the bat. His cause was no doubt helped with a career and Road Runners best score of 87 against Old Warden which also included a second wicket partnership with Anoop of 107 runs. With an average of 30 for the season Lee carried off the award of 2nd place having won the main award in 2009.
Batsman of the season went to Victor Catlin. Vic has been truly awesome this season. Particularly strong behind square on both leg and off side Vic has scored 153 runs this season and proved almost impossible to get out. With an average of 30.6 for the season including 3 not outs in 8 innings Vic rightfully claimed 1st place.
Runner up for players player of the season came as a great surprise to the recipient but not to the members. Steve Mackay has kept wicket brilliantly all season and we all know how difficult a job keeping wicket is. Poor wicket keeping costs your side runs and it is a credit to to Steve as much as the bowlers that the Runners concede very few runs.
Players player of the season was Victor Catlin. Vic's fabulous season with the bat combined with season bowling stats of 13 wickets at an average of 10.6 no doubt helped him take the award. I'm sure what was also taken in to account is Vic's dedication and devotion to running our club. A great deal of time and effort every week goes into ensuring the club runs smoothly. Vic is the heartbeat of the club and it is only right that this should be recognised along with a truly exceptional season on the field.
Injury of the season is the one award that know one really wants to win. Cricket at any level is a hard sport especially when Rob Cooke has the ball in his hands! The winner of the award this season went to Mark Knubley (check out the hall of pain from the stats page to view the damage) for a rather nasty eye injury. Mark wears contact lenses which could have made this injury very nasty indeed but to our relief no permanent damage has been done although he is still bloody ugly! Said injury was caused by Vishal Mashi who has since gone into hiding after burning effigies of him were to be seen around Luton and Dunstable immediately after the event. During a game of indoor quick cricket a particularly savage whack of the ball was attempted to be fielded by Mark. Mark took the unusual tactic of trying to catch the ball with his eye....a mistake only made once surely! I'd say congratulations Mark but that's not right really.
It was then time for the club to say thanks to all the ladies and gentlemen that help the club on match days. From scoring to making vast amounts of cakes and sandwiches we could not do it without you.........to all those that helped we thank you.
The web team here at Runner Towers would also like to make special mention of two individuals. Firstly Richard Catlin of Catlin Media productions. Rich helps to run the club alongside Vic but also spends his time and effort providing video footage for the web site and give us all a good laugh. Secondly we think that Adam Hassall's efforts as skipper should not go unnoticed. For those that have been captain we all know that the responsibility can be a challenging one. With a club such as ours it proves even more so in my opinion. The clubs ethos of keeping everyone involved can sometimes be a difficult balancing act when also trying to win the game. Adam has performed his duties brilliantly and the fact we have had the most successful season in the clubs history is testament to his cricketing and leadership skills.
So, what a season! Some great individual performances but what should also be regonised is that cricket is a team sport. There really are too many people to mention that have gone into making this our most successful season in ten years of the Road Runners. We have played as a team, we have shared the disappoint of loss as a team and we have shared the joy of winning as a team. We have played the game in the true spirit that is was meant to be played in and we have come out victorious. The Plough have played brilliantly well and it is only right that they share the league trophy with us this season as we could not be separated. Regardless of this fact our team spirit, club ethos and good looks means the Road Runners are the best team in the league not just on the field but off also.
Congratulations and well done to all for a truly memorable season of cricket!

Players Player of the season voting
Here we are once a again, it's time for the members to have their say and vote for their player of the season 2010. Competition as ever is very close as there have been some strong performances. Net sessions continue to be very well attended on a Friday and this has reflected in a very good season for the Runners, one of which you should all be very proud.
Now, back to business. The league presentation evening as you are all aware is being held on Saturday 30th October. The Runners will be lifting the league trophy for the first time, albeit as join winners with The Plough....then again it wasn't our fault they didn't want to risk a play off!
On that evening we shall also be making our own awards, Bowler and Batsman of the season this will be awarded based on statistics from the qualifying games. The afore mentioned Players Player of the season is voted for by the members. Here is how you can cast your vote. Simply send an email to club@roadrunnerscc.org with your selection for Players Play of the season. These will go straight to the awards committee who will no doubt be spending hours counting many thousands of votes they will receive. Each member is able to vote once so think carefully of your selection. Your vote must be received by the closing date of Friday 22nd October. Votes after this date will not qualify but you maybe charged for your email!

Honours even in final match
One of the most glorious sights in cricket is the main pitch in front of the pavilion at Dunstable Cricket Club on a glorious summers day but on this occasion the weather was far from ideal for cricket. Damp and windy conditions were very much the order of the day and if it wasn't for the fact that most of the fixtures has been completed for the season then I am sure the game would have been cancelled by the ground staff. The Runners line up against Totternhoe looked strong with the Mashi & Catlin brothers included in the eleven. Lee Jackson was unable to bowl due to injury and without a recognised wicket keeper in the squad offered to go behind the stumps. Having lost the toss the Runners were put into bat which seemed a surprising option for the opposition captain to choose as the rain was still falling.
Play commenced with the opening partnership of Vic and Anoop. Vic has proved to be a revelation with the bat this season. An unflappable technique against pace or spin has seen Vic rise up the averages within the squad and thoroughly justifies his place at the top of the order. The opening bowlers where accurate and on a nagging length right from the off with the opening pair choosing to wait for the bad ball. Anoop was carefully picking up he singles and rotating the strike. Vic finally got some width and height to deal with cleverly lofting the ball over the slips for the first boundary of the match. This was followed up next ball with almost a carbon copy of the stroke for a repeat boundary. Vic had made ten before starting to run for a single that wasn't really their. He was rightly sent back by Anoop, lost his footing on wet surface and easily stumped. Alex was next into bat, also promoted up the order due to some excellent performances this season. Alex has made just a single however before being cleaned bowled leaving the Runners 17 for 2.
The rain was still falling steadily with Lee next up at number four. The bowling was still on the money and with batsman unable to trust their footing were reluctant to dance out of their crease. Like most of the team, Lee has worked hard at his game this year in in particular his batting. Lee has gone from being almost completely inept to just inept at playing anything pitched up on his legs. Seeing the ball being worked behind square on the off side was a good site to see from the bald bloke. Lee however perished on 10 playing a cross batted heave to a slow short ball pitching in line. The ball not so much bounced but splatted on the wet wicket and hit middle stump around shin height. The hero from the previous Sunday, Garth, was next to bat. Anoop was soon to follow Lee however being given lbw for 12 to bring Micky Price to the middle. Price's appearance didn't last long being cleaning bowled without score. Rich next up working the singles and trying to get the scoreboard moving was removed for 5 being given lbw to a ball angling in towards the batsman. The umpires decision was upheld with Hawkeye suggesting the ball was hitting middle and leg around half way up. Vishal's innings lasted just one ball being COMPREHENSIVELY bowled without score with a ball that went between bat and pad. Mark made a good looking 5 before also being given lbw. Skipper, Adam Hassall has also been in good form with the bat this season and set about getting some runs for his side. Garth made a stylish 12 before allowing a ball to go between bat and pad and into his off stump. With twelfth man Roy in the middle it was a case of just trying to get some runs in the hope the Runners could defend the total with the ball. Roy finished 5 not out with Adam Hassall stumped off the last ball trying to give it some serious humpty. The Runners all out for 86 in the 30 overs....would this be enough?
Vishal opened the bowling for the Runners with some searing pace. The pace was keenly observed by the stand in wicket keeper who didn't take the frst ball cleanly and caught him on the thumb, a blast of relatively strong language followed which was heard though the stump mic in the Sky commentary box. The batsmen were again finding it hard to score with a combination of great bowling and a deteriorating wicket........but hey!......they wanted to bowl first! Vishal was first to strike for the Runners taking leg stump out of the ground to remove S.Pretty for 6. Vishal's next delivery was even better. Bowling around the wicket to the right handed N.Mistry and taking the middle stump out and depositing it some ten feet behind the batsman leaving leg and off stump still in their original position. Matty was next at the crease complete with lucky baseball cap. Vishal and Anoop had both bowled a tremendous economical spell but were now rested but there was no let up for the batting side as Vic and Rich Catlin joined the party. Vic was to strike almost immediately removing opener K.Mistry lbw for 13 with Rich taking the wicket of B.Mistry lbw for 3. Garth bowled tightly with no luck and a brief cameo from the Adam Hassall brought the downfall of A.Lawrence for 6. Matty was looking like he was going to finish the game for Totternhoe but Vic Catlin again struck. Matty trying to guide one fine from his legs didn't get enough bat on ball and was taken by the keeper down the leg side. It was such a fine deflection that none of the Runners appealed for the catch but Matty walked. Hats off to Matty, he played the game in the right spirit.....would this filter down to the lower order batsmen?
Vic again was weaving his magic with the ball claiming the wickets of P.Stanesky and A.Peart for 6 runs. Things were really getting tight now. Having looked down and out now the Runners were suddenly one wicket away from a victory with Totternhoe needing eight from the last three overs. Time for a little Vishal magic! Still bowling around the wicket some of Vishal's deliveries were unplayable with the batsman playing and missing. Vishal offered a little more width with his fifth ball of the over and the batsman took the bait. With the batsmans feet rooted to the crease he flashed hard at a ball about a foot outside off stump. The ball kept low as it had done for most of the match and found the edge of the bat. Lee behind the stumps took a great one handed low catch, diving forwards to his right. Ball held aloft......the batsman unmoved.....nothing doing with the umpire....."You are kidding me" was the question directed from the wicket keeper towards the umpire.........NOT GIVEN!
Now any normal team would probably have given up at this point but not the Runners because they're great! Scores tied going into the final over. Vic Catlin the bowler.....ball driven towards Rich Catlin at mid on.....bad single called.......ball thrown to Vic at the non strikers end.......bails removed......game tied! There was a lot of shouting and cheering at this point......cheats should never prosper!
It has been a pleasure for me, the greatest ever batsman to walk the face of the earth, to have witnessed such a super summer of cricket. This is my last report for the Road Runners and they have been truely sensational. Everyone has stepped up to the mark and has played with passion and yet at the same time remembered that the game should always be played in the spirit in which it was meant to played.
Ladies and gentlemen, you can pay upwards of £30 a month for Sky Sports. Personally I'd rather watch the Road Runners.......they're box office!

Runners snatch glory in thriller!
A thoroughly professional performance saw The Runners beat The Plough to finish joint top in the final game of the season. With PK out of the country in England's number one fast bowler Anders Jameson, has very kindly prepared the match report below.
The stage was set for a classic match. The outfield looked almost as good as lords had done for the Pro40 final on Saturday. Runners skipper Hassall won the toss and under an overcast sky put The Plough in to bat. Drama followed before a ball had been bowled when Jamie Lane withdrew from the Runners team with a domestic crisis. Mark Knubley twelfth man stepped up. The teams looked well matched. Runners were desperate to overturn their first day of the season heavy defeat to the Plough. Would this be a run fest or a tight low scoring battle?
Adam H and stand in vice captain Anoop opted for a mixed attack of Vishal and Dave Twyford. Vishal as usual was unlucky, but mean only going for 3 runs from his first three overs. Dave had more luck and took two wickets in his first 3 overs for only 11. One delivery beat the opener in flight and clattered his off stump, the second was a well flighted delivery that drew the man forward, Steve behind the stumps whipped off the bails and Matt was on his way back. The plough were in trouble 2 down off 6 overs with only 14 on the board!
The young guns (Alex and Adam Peart) were up next. Would things change...NO business as usual Alex 3 overs 2 for 12 and Adam 3 overs 1 for 9. Alex took a very smart left handed caught and bowled off his second ball and followed this up with another wicket off his forth ball with the help from the skipper who took a good catch at long on that had been in the air for what seemed like an age. The skipper decided to celebrate in traditional fashion by throwing the ball in the air, unfortunately over the next field!! He received the congratulations of the team whilst searching for the ball. It will be the "what happens next moment on a question of sport in years to come I am sure. Adam Peart not to be out done had Nev clip his slower ball into the pavilion for 6....and out of course. The big hitters were back in the hutch. This left the plough 37 for 5 off 12 overs. The ball was on top. Hassall and Vic bowled 4 tidy overs between them at at drinks The Plough were 50 for 5 off 16 overs. The run fest looked unlikely although Paul was unbeaten on 20 and went on to top score with 36 not out.
Anoop and Garth bowled after drinks but this did not change things another 20 runs coming off the next four with another great bit of work in the field. Alex fielding a tickle off the legs that Steve collected and whipped off the bails. 6 down. Garths third over of the spell bought the 7 Plough victim Steve again in the action with a smart caught behind. Dave and Alex were brought back into the attack. Things almost got worse for the Plough, but two difficult slip chances went down. They did not prove costly however with both bowlers taking another wicket in their next overs. 9 down with 90 on the board. Could the Plough reach the ton? Paul having retired walked back to the middle. Vishal bowled two more excellent overs, but again finished wicketless, but only conceded 12 from 5 overs. It was Vice captain Anoop who took the final wicket, but not before generously giving them a wide to reach the 100. Next ball Andy clipped one off his legs straight into Adam P's hands at short leg. A telling statistic was that the Runners had only conceded 10 extras.
The Runners had an unusual batting line up with Vic being promoted to open with Anoop. The instructions from the skipper - take your time. The openers were clearly listening scoring 12 from the first 5 overs of hostile, accurate bowling. Anoop had worked hard for his gritty three when he was done for pace and lost his middle stump. In came the skipper and was almost back straight away, but he survived and with Vic playing steady controlled shots the pair put on 40 giving only a couple of half chances. Boundaries were hard to come by. Drinks were taken at 42 for 1 off 16 overs. Vic had made a battling 21 when he mistimed a pull to mid off and was caught. He had done his job. John strode out to face the 90mph deliveries from Jacko and was very unlucky to be bowled off his pads for a duck. The skipper's controlled innings ended in the 22nd over when he retired on 25, just after being struck on the shoulder from a rising delivery from Charles. The runners needed 28 from 7 overs. Had the Plough bowled themselves into contention? Garth who had joined the skipper the over before his departure was playing some classical defensive strokes and was showing everyone what style really looked like!. Mark unfortunately came in and played a carbon copy of Vic's dismissal and was caught for a duck. Steve came in and after a nice clip off his legs for one hit a lusty blow that was heading the the square leg boundary when somehow Paul stuck out his left hand and took a blinding catch that was almost behind him. Runners still needed 12 off four overs. Vishal strode to the wicket and was off the mark almost straight away with a cheeky single. 11 needed from 3. Concern from the runners camp? There was no need as 3 balls later it was all over Garth finishing it off in style with a 6 over the long mid wicket boundary. The RUNNER WIN. Garth finishing on 20 not out. That telling statistic from earlier The Plough gave away 30 extras. So you could say Extras won the game!!
I grabbed a quick word with the victorious skipper after the Bubbly had stopped flowing and asked what this victory meant. " The first championship all be it a shared one is vindication for the Club ethos, we win or loose as a team, everyone plays there part. To all the squad members not here today this one is just as much for you all".
I could see the emotion was getting to the skip so left it at that.

Hassall issues a call to arms
Well the web team here at Runner Towers have again managed to grab yet another first. We have beaten off the likes of Sky Sports to bring you an exclusive interview with the Runners skipper ahead of the summit meeting with the Plough this Sunday. Speaking from his Dunstable mansion, Adam Hassall had this message for his troops:
"Guys it has come down to this, do we have the character to take the final game and with it the title? I know we do, I know you will give everything you have for the team so be brave my friends! Step in that fast bouncing delivery (it wont hurt when the pain has gone). Dive for that catch that is just out of your reach. Stride to stop that all important boundary that might give us the winning margin. Bowl with control, cunning and guile and bring the victory home. We are the lucky ones, we get to make history!"
"Thankyou everyone for a great season, let's go out in style!"

Cope misses final league game in freak finger injury
Breaking news.....Mike Cope will miss the final league game of the season after picking up a finger injury whilst trying to open a jar of pickled gurkins on a drunken late night bender. The top class opening batsman lost the battle of wills with the jar late on Thursday evening and is currently being tended to by his doting partner Caroline. The web team would like to wish Mike a speedy recovery for his sake!
Stepping in as replacement for Mike Cope will be Garth Mckenzie. Garth is a top class batsman with solid technique and renowned for his balance and poise at the crease. The Plough had better watch out!

Road Runners CC v Chairman's XI
Runners take the honours
It wasn't until after the game had finished and I was driving back to London in my Ferrari, that it suddenly dawned on me what a nostalgic occasion I had just witnessed. To anyone else watching, it was just a bunch of guys playing cricket, but having having watched the Runners for a while now I have begun to realise just what a special club this is. The Chairmans XI fixture is the bringing together of a family, a family that has a history going back some ten years now. The Chairman, Mr David Carter, continues to bat and bowl as if ageless, the reflexes may not be quite what they used to be but the brain is still sharp. In fact a conversation between Mr Carter and a young umpire was picked up on the stump mic with Carter saying "You know for the life of me I can't remember which over I said I would bowl the no-ball!"
And so to the middle, with the Road Runners having won the toss and electing to bat first. Chairmans XI had a well balanced look and boasted the talents of all three Catlin brothers, Garth Mackenzie and the talismanic opening batsman Mike Cope. Anoop & Adrian were chosen to open the batting for the Runners with Rich opening the bowling for the Chairmans XI. Rich's first two overs were spot on and set the tone early. The first wicket fell to Rich in the third over with just two runs on the score board when Adrian was trapped lbw. Harley was next to the crease and proceeded to bring stability to a shakey start. Anoop was looking comfortable at the crease, maneuvering the ball around with consumate ease. Harley, having got used to the conditions, then took on Vic and played a superb lofted stroke over the man at deep mid wicket for four. Rich was the bowler to do the damage once again taking out Harley's middle stump for ten runs. Next into Rich's sights came Lee with the Runners 15 for 2.
The bowling continued to be of the highest quality with Dave Twyford and Garth taking over from Rich & Vic. Anoop & Lee steadily built a more reasonable score to get the Runners back on track but it was Lee who was to crack first, taking on a Dave Twyford leg stump half volley and trying to clip it over deep mid wicket. Normally this shot would have brought about a boundary, on this occasion that particular part of the boundary was being patrolled by Vic Catlin. Having observed the Runners for most of the season I can say that Vic has hands as safe as Paul Collingwood's. Vic, having almost misjudged the catch as one point, then proceeded to make that catch look even more spectacular by taking it one-handed whilst jumping backwards. Lee having been dismissed for thirty runs shook Vic's hand on the way back to the pavilion. Vishal then joined his brother Anoop at the crease to further consolidate the Runners position.
Runs flowed steadily without much alarm with a classy 37 not out from Vishal. Matt was Anoop's fifth partner of the day but this was to be short lived. Dave (chairman) Carter enticed Matt into a savage cut shot that left the blade at near supersonic speed towards cover point. In the blink of an eye the ball was taken out of the air by Ryan Hassall to dismiss Matt for 6 with a stunning catch. Anoop continued to maneuver the ball around and reached his 35 with a classy drive through mid-on for four runs. Anoop then retired at the end of the over with 40 runs to his name and having seen out some thirty overs. This was a gutsy knock from a gifted batsman and something the Runners hope will stand him in good stead for seasons to come. With Jamie and Adam Hassall at the crease the runs were sure to continue at a pace, but Vic cleverly deceived Adam Hassall (15) with a yorker length delivery making a mess of the stumps and Rich producing a swinging delivery to bowl Jamie for just a single. Adam Peart then made an entertaining 7 before being run out whilst Andy and Rob managed to run the first and only three of the day to wrap up the innings. With a modest total of 179 for 7 from their 35 overs the Runners were going to have to bowl well.
Mike Cope and John Catlin were selected to open the innings for the Chairmans XI. Cope was the first face a ball with a smartly set 7-2 leg side field. Hassall was the first to strike for the Runners with Cope playing a lofted clip off his legs and the catch being pouched by Adam Peart as square leg. Adam Hassall then dismissed Garth for a duck, the ball hitting the stumps when Garth seemed to have everything covered. Rich Catlin then joined his bother John at the crease, but John was next to go. Lee using the leg cutter from around the wicket squaring John up with the nick just carrying to Jamie behind the stumps taking the catch diving forwards. In the meantime Rich began to gather his runs together whilst Phil joined him at the crease. Phil made seven before having his furniture rearranged bringing yet another Catlin brother, Vic, to the crease. This partnership sprung the game into life. The Runners were looking good having contained their opponents to 47 for 4 of 13 overs but Vic & Rich began to amass a rapid collection of runs. Lee was reintroduced to the bowling attack, catching Vic in the old soap with a delivery that nipped back sharply dish before Vic edged between the keeper and first slip from a delivery that reared up from just short of a length.
Runs continued to be chalked up by the Chairmans XI with Rich for once launching a six of the safe part of the boundary and shortly after retired on 35 after surviving a close run out call. Steve was next up and played some stunning stokes to backward square leg boundary. Rob was to claim Steve's wicket with his trademark yorker (full toss) for 19 rapid runs. Ryan's stay at the crease was brief with Lee bowling him out for a second ball duck. Vic continued his relentless quest for runs and retired on 35 to join his brother Rich in the hutch. Dave Twyford and Roy didn't last long at the crease with Anoop flicking the off stump of Twyford for 2 and Adam Peart taking a simple caught and bowled chance to remove Roy. Dave Carter was joined in the middle by Rich who was to now continue his innings. Dave Carter having looked classy in defence gave another caught and bowled chance this time to Anoop who gratefully accepted the offering. The Runners at this stage were beginning to think the game was slipping away from them with Vic and Rich at the crease the score continued to rattle along with the Chairmans XI reaching 154 at the end of the 32nd over.
The 33rd over started little better. 2 byes and two boundaries were conceded in the first five balls of Vishal's over to leave the batting side with 17 runs to find from the remaining 13 deliveries. Vishal's final ball of the over was a delivery just short of a length on leg stump. Vic the facing batsman tried to glance it down the leg side only to get too faint a contact on the ball. The ball was athletically taken by stand in keep Adam Hassall to secure the win for the Road Runners.
All in all a fantastic days cricket. Special thanks should go to Vic Catlin for rearranging the fixture at late notice due to a waterlogged pitch at Dunstable CC. Also a big thumbs up to Vis for a fabulous tea (much better then the ones we get lumbered with at Lords!)
It's difficult to pick a man of the match for this game. Special mentions with the bat should go to Vic (44), Vishal (37*) & Anoop with a career best of 40 not out. Bowlers with two wickets were Adam Hassall, Anoop, Lee and Vishal. The the man of the match award on this occasion goes to Rich Catlin for a truly marvellous performance that even my mate Freddie Flintoff would be proud of. Rich's innings of 40 not out and partnership with Vic were the mainstay of the Chairmans XI innings whilst his bowling figures of 6-0-25-3 were no less impressive.
Having been dropped from the England squad for the forthcoming one day and T20 series against Pakistan I am now going to find a quiet corner to sulk in!

Road Runners v Kensworth
Runners Flop! (but it was only a friendly)
G'day boys! Picky Ronting here taking over from my arch nemesis Pieter Kevinson. Jus gotta say seen some top quality cricket at the Dunstable CC today. Highs and lows, slogs and blows! So starting in the traditional manner ... in the middle.
Anoop, the voted captain for the day, (there was a ballot earlier) won the toss and decided to field first. Seeing as there was still moisture in the pitch, due to a heavy rain fall the previous night, also along with a bowling biased side, a good decision.
Rob Cook and Dave Twyford opened up the bowling, Cooky taking the first scalp with a top edge swallowed up by, the big man, Garth at mid wicket. A decent catch. But then Kensworth found some solidity in their batting and started to build a foundation. Next paceman Vishal Masih, still high (LEGALLY) from his first 2 wickets of the season from last week, took a pounding and ended wicketless for 35 runs after 5 overs. Captain Noop stepped up to the bowling challenge and ripped the stumps apart breaking the deadlock in his first over. In came the runners "go-to" guy Vic Catlin, and with his first ball took a wicket lbw, but it wasn't over, greedy catlin wanted more, so in the same over took a caught and bowled for an outstanding double wicket maiden. Vic finished on 3 overs for 19 with 3 wickets. Runners were then troubled by some out and out slogging by the tail of the kensworth XI. But Cooky was hungry for wickets in his second spell ripped apart the dangerous wagging tail (softened up by vishal with some 'chin-music' bowling) also helped by the once again go to guy Vic. Taking an awesome running, diving catch to his right- complete with skin shredding slide. Rob ended on 6 overs 3 wickets for 18 runs. Alex cleaned up the lower order aided by a top draw catch from Steve McKay scooping an edge almost impossibly before it hit the turf. Kensworth were bowled out inside the 40 overs for 205 (36.1 overs) batting was the next challenge...
Cooky was given the task to open the batting with Garth, and a solid start was crucial! Cooky started the boundary count in true textbook form, cleanly elevating the ball down the ground. But its not all about boundaries, singles were taken left right and centre which caused all sorts of confusion in the field, frustrating the bowling attack. The alert pair put on a 50 partnership after 13 overs. Soon the overzealous Cooky decided he had enough of running and after hitting 4 convincing boundaries tried for a 5th and ended bowled on 23. Next in was the captain Anoop and was soon off the mark, but his first boundary came in the most peculiar way, in true 'Alistair Cook' fashion, an unnecessary overthrow tickled over the rope adding to the annoyance of the kensworth boys. Garth used up his life line on a NO BALL that was skied to mid wicket. (again kensworth were not amused). But then fell in similar fashion to a legal delivery. Cpt Anoop stuck around picking off singles and extras when available. Then got out after top edging to point. Then came ... the collapse! 3 wickets fell in such a small amount of time, only the "go-to" guy (you guessed it) the headline stealing Vic Catlin saved complete embarrassment. Partnered with the runners up and coming star Alex Knubley. Together with Vic's no nonsense, brutish, style and Alex's top class front foot stroke play, they created some defiance (and possible winning hope)....but sadly, it was not enough. Vic ended his batting resistance as top scorer of 29, just after Alex's run of glorious drives ended by a top edge ballooning so high there was enough time for the bumbling traitorous wicky to take a comfortable catch. Dave Twyford was the last man to cause trouble but was soon bowled out, bravely trying to press on and make the run chase more better reading.Sadly the runners ended well short of the target all out on 153 (38 overs)
Runners shouldn't be too disheartened they put up a fight, as they had the opposition worried at several points. This should go down as experience. Learn from this time out in the middle and put it where it counts... in the league. I've got to do some Australian stuff now, so until next time...

Road Runners v The Victoria - a new star is born!
Sunday 15th dawned bright and fair and despite some recent heavy rain the outfield at Chalgrave was surprisingly firm. The Runners lost the toss but got their way being put into bat first. The batting line up had a somewhat unusual look to it with Rich Catlin being asked to open up the innings with his elder (but much better looking) brother John. Mark Knubley replaced James Fendick who was sadly unable to make the fixture after being selected. However, it was another Knubley, Alex, who was to grab the headlines in a very testing encounter. Alex bowling five stunning overs taking four wickets. He has also continued to impress in Friday night net sessions with the bat gaining promotion up the batting order to number seven and did not disappoint with a rapid 20 including a glorious six of deep fine leg.
The innings was set up by a fine opening partnership between John & Rich who saw off the opening bowlers putting on 23 for the first wicket before Rich was dismissed for 9 caught behind off a rising delivery just outside off stump. Next up the ramp was Vishal who is in fine form with the blade this season but sadly this was not his day. Standing at the none strikers end Vishal called for a single after seeing an edge fall just short of second slip and believing the ball to have gone under the fielder and away towards the boundary. The slip fielding was actually laying on top of the ball and Vishal was aware of his peril too late as the bails were removed with him short of his crease. When Adrian was cleaned up for 4 two overs later the situation for the Runners was looking far from comfortable. It has to be said that The Victoria have come on leaps and bounds this season. Their batting line up still needs some strengthening but their bowling and fielding was not far off as good as you will see in the league. Next up was Lee in the number five slot, not in the greatest of nick so far this season. The nerves were soon settle though with a classy looking cut behind square for four. John Catlin was soon to find his way back to the pavilion being caught for 11 leaving the Runners reeling at 45 for 4 after ten overs. Skipper Adam Hassall then joined Lee in the middle with the intention of putting on some serious runs. However, once again The Victoria fielded exceptionally well whilst the bowling was accurate with boundaries hard to come by. Lee & Adam finally made their 25 and retired it was Alex, Garth and Mark who entered the fray with license to flash the blade. Once Alex was cleaned up by Boxy for a brisk yet classy 20 from not as many balls, Mark and Garth put on 17 runs in the last two overs to get the Runners to 162.
The Victoria began their run chase with their deadly opening duo of Boxy and Crawford but the Runners didn't give them a sniff. Opening from the Plough End, Anoop bowled a testing first over conceding just two singles whilst his older brother(the one with the Simon Cowell smile) Vishal, steamed in from the other. Vishal has been out of luck so far this season with the ball. He has bowled very well but not had things go his way but it was here that all things changed. Firstly knocking back Crawford's off peg with a ball that pitched middle and leg for 2. Then in his third over he claimed the prized wicket of Boxy who never looked at ease against Vishal's pace knocking back an exposed leg stump. Alex was to steal the show though returning figures of 5-1-17-4 and missed out on a 5 fer by the closest of margins. The Runners acurate bowling was to prove too much for their opositions batting attack and closed the 30 overs out with a 18 run victory. Although there were some fine individual performances for the Runners team it is for his performance with both bat and ball that Alex secures my man of the match award.
The next league fixture is The Plough v The Victoria and on the evidenced of this performance that The Victoria are very capable of a win. Either way The Runners have it all to play for in their last league fixture against current league leaders The Plough. Before I leave you I would just like to leave you with something that some might find amusing.......athough I personally don't get.

Competition Winner!
A fantastic response from the members to the competition below but there can only be one winner. Some answers were amusing to say the least and had the web team here at Runner Towers in stitches. There were two correct answers but the first received was from our chairman of selectors Mr Victor Catin. The other correct entry was from Alex Knubley but he sadly bowled far too many bouncers at nets on Friday to be considered for the winning entry! To be fair Vic's email was received before nets started so it is only right that he should be the winner. The answer of course is that Road Runners batting legend Mr Mike Cope (back row, seventh from the left) although the West Indian gentleman in the centre of the shot, Sir Clive Lloyd wasn't bad either! Mr Cope was sadly never selected for the England test squad. According to Graham Gooch he had far too much style at the crease which caused unrest within the top order batsman. England's loss is the Road Runners gain.
Congratulations Vic! See yourself about claiming your prize!

Runners edge thriller
The Runners extended their winning streak to seven games edging a thrilling encounter against the Doctors in a T20 contest yesterday at Dunstable. Our heroes were set a target of 142 to win after restricting their opponents to 141 for the loss of nine wickets. Vinod was devastating with the ball for the Road Runners taking three wickets from four balls in his final over. Victor Catlin's fine form with the bat this season continued with another unbeaten display and was there at the end playing a blistering stroke to the boundary to win the game. More details to follow.

Skipper issues battle cry ahead of summit meeting
The Runners skipper Adam Hassall chose the pre friendly press conference to speak about the summit meeting this Sunday with The Plough. Hassall was very upbeat and rightly so due to the Runners recent fantastic run of form that sees them undefeated in the last five matches. Speaking to Sky Sports from the press centre at Dunstable Cricket Club Hassall first thanked his team. "Guys, thanks for all your efforts so far this season we have put ourselves back in the position to challenge for our first league title. This Sunday's game is a must win for both sides, as it will have a huge bearing on the title. For all of you who are selected, I am sure like "The management" you want to avenge our first weekend loss to the Plough and I am sure that we will come out the victors. The performance against the Vic was superb and have made the other teams stand up and think. As Winston Churchill once said or was it Sir Bobby Robson - your team needs you, or something like that. Lets do to the Plough what England did to the Aussies in the first 50 overs one day game and win."
The squad announcement for the game is to follow.

Lane puts Victoria to the sword
The Road Runners continued their winning streak by crushing The Victoria by 69 runs in the league fixture on Sunday.
Having won the toss the Runners elected to bat first and no time was spared by the opening duo of Lane and Mckenzie in getting the visitors off to a splendid start. After just four overs the opening pair had put on 50 runs with some blistering stoke play on view. Jamie Lane having retired on 26 came back in again at the end of the innings and continue the run fest launching to massive sixes over long off to finish as top scorer with and unbeaten 53. Garth McKenzie also got a second bite of the cherry but was eventually bowled for a fabulous 37. Skipper Adam Hassall and Chairman of selectors Victor Catlin both scored 26 to bolster the score still further. It was yet another failure though with the bat for Lee Jackson, bowled all ends up for 3. The Runners posted a massive 217 runs which was to prove far too big a score for The Victoria to handle.
The Runners bowling attack was bolstered with the return of their top bowler Rob Cooke but it was to be one of those days for Rob and unluckily remained wicketless with figures of 5-2-24-0. Anoop proved very difficult for the Victoria batsmen to handle returning figures of 4-0-7-1 in a top spell of bowling. Richard Catlin without doubt bowled the ball of the day removing D.Curtis for 8 with his slower spinning delivery. The Victoria were always going to find chasing the score down a very difficult task and ended up 69 runs light for the loss of 7 wickets in their 30 overs.
A good all round solid performance from the Runners. There is a tougher test ahead with the next fixture being a top of the table clash with The Plough, a game neither can afford to lose if they have designs on winning the title this season.

Runners capture first trophy
The Road Runners captured the first trophy in the clubs history at the annual ten10 tournament at Chalgrave today. Boasting a 16 strong squad The Runners proved too much for the opposition crushing The Victoria and current league leaders The Plough on route to the final. The final between our hero's and Toddington CC sadly was not able to take place due to a heavy rain storm and play was abandoned for the day with the captains agreeing to share the trophy.
The Runners played some stunning ten10 cricket in their opening match against The Plough with Jamie and Adam Hassall once again retiring undefeated with Dave Twyford continuing has fabulous form with the bat. The bowling was equally at it's best assisted by some great fielding to beat The Plough by 30 runs.
The second match for the Runners was against The Victoria which on paper looked like it should be a walk over. Having restricted their opponents to just over 50 runs from their ten overs The Runners decided to make a more exciting game of it by losing some very quick wickets. Adam Hassall then came in to steady the innings and a quick fire three ball 14 from Lee put The Runners back on track.
All in all it has to be said that it was a fabulous team performance. It's great to see no matter if things go well or ill that everybody supports one and other which makes our team the best in the league. Video footage of the tournament will be available shortly courtsey of Catlin Media Group so watch this space!
It's back to league business this coming Sunday with our match against The Victoria and The Runners cannot afford to slip up in their hunt for the league title this season.

Runners win!
The Road Runners won a closely fought contest against The Doctors at Dunstable Cricket Club on Sunday the 30th May. After losing the toss the Runners were put into bowl and did very well in the field with Anoop, Garth and Adrian all taking two wickets. Our heroes were set a target of 189 to win in their 35 overs. There were some exceptional performances with the bat from Jamie, Vishal and Adam Hassall. In the penultimate over Dave Twyford produced a glorious stroke hitting the ball back over the bowlers head to the long off boundary for four runs to win the game for the home side. Hearty congratulations to the team for this much desired and hard fought win. Finally a big well done to Mr Twyford......who needs a new bat when the old one works that well!

The Runners will be out for revenge this year after narrowly losing last years fixture in the final over. Road Runners CC are proud to announce that England star batsman Pieter Kevinson has signed a one year deal to write the Road Runner match reports of the 2010 season.
Kevinson was quoted as saying 'I don't normally do this sort of thing, I just like playing cricket but once I found out my good friend Anoop was playing for the Runners I couldn't say no'.
Chairman of selectors Mr Victor Catlin whilst pleased with the signing of such a prominent figure was disappointed that his little red tin is now somewhat lighter than he would like.

Catlin Media Group secures Road Runners TV rights deal
Road Runners CC are delighted to announce that Catlin Media Group has successfully bid for the TV rights to screen all of the fixtures for the forthcoming season. Catlin Media's chief executive Mr Richard Catlin was 'extremely pleased' with the decision despite 'stiff' competition. Beating off a late bid from Sky Sports Mr Catlin promised to bring cricket back to the masses. Rumors that the Sky Sports bid was well in a six figure sum have been dismissed as pure speculation with Mr Catlin quoted as saying 'All that was needed to secure the rights was to promise to buy the team beers for the whole season'. Further speculation saw Alcoholics Anonymous rumored to be the new team shirt sponsor. Chief of selectors Mr Victor Catlin has dismissed these rumors as 'Completely unfounded'.

AGM Minutes
Firstly thank you to all that turned out for the 2010 AGM, it was good to see so many faces there. The meeting was opened briefly by our chairman, Dave Carter who has retained his role for another year. Vic Catlin then gave a brief summary of the previous season. The view was that as a team he thought we had under performed. Having said that Vic did acknowledge that the team had made big strides during the season and looked forward to even bigger things for the coming season.
Vic & Rich Catlin retain their god like status as administrators and also make up two thirds of the selection committee. The third member is yet to be confirmed.
Adam Hassell was voted in for a second season as skipper with Lee Jackson as this years vice captain. Good luck to Adam, I am sure he is plotting the Road Runners first league title!
Membership fees are again £10 for the 2010 season, this will cover cost of registration, insurance etc.
The league fixture list is nearly ready for the 2010 season. A provisional date of the the 18th April currently looks likely to be our first league game of the season. When the full fixture list is available it will be posted on the fixtures page of this site.
A decision has been made by the members that the team will have a Road Runners CC shirt for the coming season. Several designs for the logo were on view during the evening. There will shortly be an opportunity to vote for our team logo. The designs will be posted on web site and you will be able to cast your vote so watch this space!

A message from the Skipper
Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to all of you. I had a fantastic season which would not have been half as enjoyable if I had not had your support. Thank you for putting up with my batting orders, bowling changes and field placings without question, I do realise some of them did seem a bit odd, but I think most of them worked out o.k. in the end. I tried to involve you all as much as possible.
Everyone likes to win, but that is only half the story as far as I am concerned. Having fun is equally as important to me and you guys always made it fun. Long may it continue, that is as much a part of our club as winning the league is, which I am sure is just around the corner.
I can't wait for the coming season, thank you again everyone.Skip
4th January 2010
Happy New Year to you all!
Vic has sent an e-mail out asking for members both new and old to confirm their membership for next season. The membership fee has been kept to £10 which covers registration and insurance. The AGM will be held during February where one of the agenda items will be where the club goes this season so a swift response on the number of club members would be most helpful. As soon as a date is set for the AGM you will be informed by e-mail and the date posted on the news page of our website. As most of you know after a slow start last season it turned into a very exciting year of cricket for the Runners and I am sure that the coming season will see us push forward as a team and perhaps we can go one better.

Road Runners Website goes live!
The Road Runners Cricket Team now has a website! If you are reading this page then you already know that. Due to budget limitations (i.e. there isn't a budget) this website has been created by a complete novice and therefore may not be as slick as the other websites you are used to visiting. I trust you find the website informative and fun to use. If you have any constructive criticism or thoughts on how this website can be improved then please contact Vic Catlin who will put the ideas forward to the committee for discussion. In the meantime we hope you enjoy our new website!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Adrian for his technical support on this project and Lucy my eight year old daughter for testing this site and frequently identifying small glitches.
